    The Director, Accounting will be responsible for leading the general accounting and non-merchandise accounts payable teams, managing the review and processing of store leases and related payments, and all review and control of capital spending and the fixed asset function. This position has responsibility for monthly and yearly general ledger closings and account reconciliations, coordination of internal and external financial reporting, and oversight of weekly transactional reporting. Therefore, the qualified candidate will be highly organized, able to prioritize and multitask, and will possess strong financial analysis and problem solving skills. This role will involve daily interaction with team members across all departments, so the ideal candidate will have excellent communication and leadership skills. In addition to the day to day accounting functions, this position will be responsible for the development and training of their direct and indirect reports. The Director will report directly to the Vice President of Accounting. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and driven accounting professional with management experience who is ready to lend their talents to a fast-paced and growing retail company.

    Essential Functions:

    Transactional

    • Ensure invoices are processed and paid in an accurate, timely, and complete manner
    • Oversee the review and processing of capital expenditures to ensure proper capitalization and classification for both tax and GAAP purposes
    • Lead in the development of annual capital budgets, monthly capital spending forecasts, and analysis of related variances
    • Oversee the processing of the fixed asset subledger to ensure the accuracy of recorded depreciation (book and tax) and the proper recording of the disposal of assets
    • Oversee the review of store and other property leases to ensure that payments are made in a timely and accurate manner
    • Direct the interaction between the Finance and Real Estate departments to ensure that all billings and reconciliations with landlords are properly reviewed and processed and that related accruals are properly recorded
    • Lead the performance of transactional research, as requested
    • Lead the preparation of weekly reports of transaction activity

    Monthly/Annual General Ledger Closing

    • Ensure that Accounts Payable and Asset Management subledgers are properly closed each month
    • Ensure that all standard entries, including allocations, are properly developed and posted
    • Ensure that all needed accruals are properly developed, documented, and posted
    • Lead the review of the trial balance to ensure that any necessary closing adjustments are identified and made
    • Schedule and oversee the overall closing of the general ledger each month, including coordinating the efforts of other teams within the Finance department, to ensure its timely completion
    • Assist in the coordination of the annual audit, including the preparation of supporting schedules and analyses required by the auditors

    Reporting/Filings

    • Weekly analysis reports of invoices processed and checks cut
    • Delivery of monthly internal “Black Book” report
    • Delivery of periodic external reporting to our lenders and tax accountants
    • Coordination of income tax filings and follow up
    • Various Census reporting

    Account Reconciliations

    • Lead and review the preparation of monthly account reconciliations to ensure their accuracy and completeness and to ensure the timely resolution of reconciling differences
    • Oversee the execution within Lawson of the auto-reconciliation of cash transactions processed by our financial institution and the detailed cash subledger transactions
    • Coordinate the completion and review of account reconciliations prepared by other teams within the Finance department

    Improvement Opportunities/Other

    • Lead the continuing development and revision of policy and procedure documentation, including coordination with other impacted departments within the company
    • Identify and lead the development and implementation of process improvement opportunities
    • Identify and lead the implementation of automation opportunities (Lawson, Excel, scanning)
    • Identify cost savings opportunities, including opportunities within other areas of the company
    • Identify internal control improvement opportunities and oversee / implement processes for ensuring that controls are operating consistently and effectively
    • Help lead the implementation of technology updates / installations (Lawson, Work Oasis purchase orders, scanning, purchase cards, etc.)
    • Perform various research to ensure our compliance with GAAP, tax, and legal requirements, including tax-basis depreciation
    Requirements:

    • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or related field required
    • MBA and/or CPA is a significant plus
    • 10 years overall experience in accounting and/or financial functions, including experience at the manager level or above
    • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience
    • Experience with accounts payable, fixed assets, and capital spending
    • Experience in the retail industry is a plus
    • Experience with property leases is a plus

The Senior Specialist will be responsible for reviewing invoices for accuracy and propriety, verifying that they have been properly coded, and entering them into an automated accounting system for payment.
