In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, a member of the English branch of the family, bought Château Brane-Mouton and renamed it Château Mouton-Rothschild.

Mouton-Rothschild has the singular distinction of being upgraded in 1973 (after years of tireless lobbying) to the exalted position of First Growth, standing shoulder to shoulder with Latour, Lafite, Margaux and Haut-Brion. In addition to the extraordinary contents of the bottle, Mouton-Rothschild is also famous for their labels which are highly-regarded collector’s items. Since 1945, Baron Philippe de Rothschild has commissioned an artist to do an annual painting which is depicted at the top of the label. International masters that have appeared on the label consist of artists such as Warhol, Chagall, Miró, and Picasso, to name a few.

The Baron died in 1988, and his daughter, the dynamic Baroness Philippine, is the spiritual head of the empire.
