In 1878, at the foot of Santa Maddalena near Bolzano, Fritz Kupelwieser founded a cellar that still bears his name. In the beginning, Fritz Kupelwieser produced renowned red and white wines in the artisinal winemaking tradition of the Altoaltesina. During the 1960s, Fritz Kupelwieser began to produce “superior whites” in response to increasing demands for elegant white wines. Zealous producers provide the winemaker with top-quality grapes, and numerous international awards attest to the fine quality of the resulting wines.
The vineyards are planted in primary rock soil and are carefully farmed with greatly reduced yields, resulting in the focused and precise varietal aromas that have become Zemmer’s hallmark throughout the years.
While many collaborators have worked hard to promote Kupelwieser both in Italy and abroad, the winery has always remained faithful to the artisinal traditions of its founder. Today Peter Zemmer, the grandson of Fritz, manages Kupelwieser. He is recognized as one of the better wine producers in Italy, and he won “Winemaker of the Year” in 2002. Peter has continued in his grandfather’s vision by being selective in the choice of grapes for vinification, expressing love and care in the aging of the wines and showing great competence in its distribution.
