The vineyards of the Monterey region
he Monterey region, which stretches along Highway 101 from the city of Salinas south to the San Luis Obispo County border, is home to some of the best vineyards in
California. Over the past two decades, many large wine conglomerates rapidly developed vineyards in this very cool region with the hope of increasing sales of quality
Chardonnay. Most of the wine produced is blended with other appellations and sold as generically labeled California Chardonnay. Much of the success has come from the sub-regions of Monterey such as
Arroyo Secco, which is producing excellent Chardonnay,
Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Also showing promise in the limestone warm hillsides is the nice fruit-forward offerings of
Syrah.
