The appellation of Pouilly-Fuissé, comfortably nestled in the Burgundy region of France, encompasses five villages: Pouilly, Fuissé, Vergisson, Chaintre and Solutré and is the most lovely and photogenic area within the Mâconnais. The wine vineyards are scattered over the hillsides at altitudes of 1,000 to 1,300 feet on a series of amphitheatre-like slopes, which trap the sun. When yields are controlled, Pouilly-Fuissé produces Chardonnay that is well balanced, with crisp acidity, rich tree and citrus fruit flavors and a refreshing finish. Hints of mineral and stone flavors are wonderfully reflected in these whites. There are producers who opt to age their Pouilly-Fuissé in oak, but the vast majority is aged in stainless steel tanks. The wines of Pouilly-Fuissé are definitely a no-miss.
