Saint-Véran
Saint-Véran
(san vay-RAHN) has always played second fiddle to
Pouilly-Fuissé. It was given its appellation status in 1971 when the government recognized that the
Chardonnay they produced in the chalky hillsides seemed to have nearly as much character as Pouilly-Fuissé itself. Because most consumers know very little about
Saint Véran, there is less demand for it, so yields tend to be very low, resulting in wines that can rival many a Pouilly-Fuissé. The wines of Saint-Véran are crisp and clean with refreshing fruit flavors of tree fruit, including apple, pear and lemon, with further nuances of mineral and steel. They are produced in an easy-drinking style and should be consumed when released. At about two-thirds the price of Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Vérans represent extraordinary
white wine values.
