To add to and clear up the other reviews...
First - Jack Daniels is a whiskey - all whiskey's are "made" to the standard of "straight" Bourbon, but they do not call themselves that. So yes - whiskey is a bourbon and all bourbons are not whiskey. Jack Daniels is one of the highest graded American/Tennessee Whiskey's.
Second - you do need a palate - Jack Daniels has Green, Black, Gentlemen and Single Barrel labels along with the new Honey which is a bourbon - besides the option of going to Lynchburg and purchasing your barrel directly. The taste has changed over the years, starting in 1987 when they started lowering the alcohol proof from 90 to 80 percent over time. Green and Black are both 80 proof now and is a reason for the taste difference for those over time. Black is "aged" a little longer then green, but with the lower alcohol proof, doe not take in the favor of the charred oak barrels so takes longer to flavor. Gentlemen Jack is smoother and a little higher proof. The great taste and flavor is with the single barrel - which you will find on the back of your tongue and it is still done at a higher 96 proof and is great! If anyone has and wants to sell the 2011 Holiday Select which was done at 100 proof - reply to this review!

I love this stuff! It was the first whiskey I tried in my rock n' roll youth and has stuck with me into rock n' roll middle age! I've tried many other whiskies over the years. I have learned to truly appreciate whiskey and have come across some truly amazing bottles in my search. Old No. 7, though it may not necessarily be complex, is my faithful daily bottle - my desert island whiskey!

Jack Daniels was one of my introductions to whiskey, and ever since I finished that bottle, I've felt little reason to try it (the Black label) again. This isn't what I'd call pleasant or enjoyable, whether on its own or in a cocktail. It's very straightforward was far as whiskey goes, which some people might want. But for me, it's unfulfilling. Not bad, just tough to enjoy.

As far as I'm concerned this is bourbon and I drink as such. I have not tried the small-batch, single-barrel and barrel-proof products which are much higher in alcohol content. I don't mix my whiskeys, other than over ice or a little bit of water sometimes. While I'm writing this, I can highly recommend Barbados Mt. Gay Extra Old Rum, which should be sipped neat, just like a good bourbon or single barrel scotch..

It is National Bourbon Heritage Month and I open up the web page for Bourbon selections and what do I see as the first "bourbon" listed? Jack Daniels... Jack Daniels is NOT A BOURBON!!! I repeat, it is NOT A BOURBON. It is Tennessee Whiskey. If you want to call it Whiskey, fine. Bourbon is also a whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon. I expect more from Total Wine!

Jack Daniels was one of my favorites, when back in the days it was 86 proof. It s just is not as good at 80 proof. Several of my old friends wont buy it any more. May be if enough people tell them that the new Jack is not as good as the OLD JACK, may be they will bring it back to 86 PROOF
