Scuttlebutt Brewing Co.

Family owned and operated by Phil and Cynthia “Scuttle” Bannan, the Scuttlebutt Brewing Co. of Everett, Wash., brewed its first beer on July 4, 1996 with a 20-barrel system in the brew house, two 20-barrel fermenters and one 20-barrel bright tank. They brewed three styles of beer and sold 170 barrels the first year. Since then Scuttlebutt’s capacity has grown and their product line has broadened to include six year-round styles of hand-crafted ale, including Scuttlebutt Porter, Amber Ale, Homeport Blonde and Gale Force IPA, plus a long roster of special and seasonal beers.

Scuttlebutt beers are brewed with the Northwest’s finest ingredients: barley from Vancouver; hops from Yakima and Mabton, Wash.; proprietary yeast from Odell, Oregon; and water from the Spada Reservoir in the Cascade Mountains. The brewery focuses on sustainable practices, sending the spent grain from the beer-making process to feed cattle outside of Arlington, Wash.

By 2006 it became clear that Scuttlebutt’s original location would no longer support the increasing demand for their beers. That summer the Bannans found a new building, and began the necessary work to turn a warehouse into a production brewery. The brewery went from 2,500 square feet with 12-foot ceilings to 8,100 square feet with 18-foot ceilings in a facility planned to support many more years of growth.
