German immigrant David G. Yuengling came to the United States from Germany and established a brewery in Pottsville, Pa., in 1829. More than 180 years later, the Yuengling brewery is now America’s oldest.
By 1899 Yuengling was under its third generation of family management with Frank Yuengling at the helm. He steered the business through the tough years of Prohibition, keeping it alive by brewing non-alcoholic beer and constructing a dairy across the street. In 1933, Yuengling shipped a truckload of Yuengling Winning Beer to President Franklin D. Roosevelt to celebrate of the end of Prohibition. Frank Yuengling survived Prohibition as well, guiding the brewery until his death in 1963.
Management passed to sons Richard and F. Dorhman Yuengling, and then to the next generation, Richard “Dick” Yuengling, Jr., in 1985. Two years later the brewery reintroduced Yuengling Traditional Lager, which would ultimately become its flagship brand.
Brewery expansion in 1998 and the purchase of a former Stroh’s brewery in Tampa, Fla., in 1999 helped meet increasing demand. Today, Yuengling beer is distributed in 16 eastern states.
Yuengling lager is famous for its rich amber color and medium-bodied flavor, with roasted caramel malt for a subtle sweetness and a combination of Cluster and Cascade hops, delivering a well-balanced taste and distinct character. The brewery’s other beers include Yuengling Porter, Black & Tan, Light Lager and Lord Chesterfield Ale.
