California Common/ Steam Beer

Brewed using a lager yeast strain, California Common or Steam Beer is fermented at warmer temperatures normally associated with ale yeast fermentation and generally exhibits some ale-like fruity ester influences, along with plenty of traditional lager character. Though “California Common” is the official style name, this lager has its roots planted in San Francisco, with Anchor Brewing Company’s Anchor Steam Beer credited as the first-ever steam beer. Anchor is the only brewer that may legally use the trademark, “steam beer.” The lager’s color ranges from medium or dark amber to copper. Herbal, woody and earthy hops balance caramel and toasty malt notes, which generally lead off the flavors. But hop personality is still pronounced, as is a crisp, lager-like finish.
