OVERVIEW

American craft brewers can take credit for reviving India Pale Ale since introducing their interpretations of the style to the American market in the 1990s. Brewed to bold levels of hop aroma, flavor and bitterness, American IPAs are perhaps more akin to original English IPAs from the 1800s than any others today. The American hop varietals in American IPAs take fruity, citrusy, floral, piney, resinous aromas and flavors to much higher levels than in standard American Pale Ales. Ranging in color from pale gold to orange to deep copper, some American IPAs are clear, and others may be hazy if dry-hopped or left unfiltered. The intense hop bitterness in the best American IPAs predominates over medium, clean malt levels, making this a no-apologies American beer style with hop character that picks up where American Pale Ale leaves off.

When Adam Avery opened the Avery Brewing Co. in Boulder, Colo., in 1993, he was bringing several years of homebrewing experimentation to the next level.

Starting with a seven-barrel brewhouse, Avery initially produced three flagship beers: Out of Bounds Stout, which won the gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 1994; Redpoint Amber Ale; and Ellie’s Brown Ale, an American Brown Ale named for Avery’s Chocolate Lab, Ellie. A multi-award winning ale, Ellie’s Brown won the 1997 Colorado State Fair first-place Brown Ale award, the 2002 Top of the Town Award from Denver’s 5280 Magazine and the 2007 New York Times "Best of the Browns" award, among other honors.

Avery Brewing has expanded tremendously since its founding, with many beers added to its year-round, seasonal and special-release lineup, including India Pale Ale (an American IPA), White Rascal (Witbier), Old Jubilation Ale (a winter seasonal) and others.

Since September 2010, several Avery beers have been packaged in cans, along with traditional bottles. “Every year seems to get better and better around Avery Brewing Company, with more experimentation, more cool beers and more great people every new day,” the founder says.
