6 DIY Ideas for How to Wrap a Wine Bottle

Learn fun and easy ways to wrap a bottle of wine to make gift-giving extra special for your friends and family.

A nice bottle of wine is a welcome gift, plus there's a strong chance it will be opened to share. Of course, if you're going to give such a classic present, it's a good idea to personalize it. After all, wrapping gifts in fun ways is just one of the many traditions that makes gift giving special. So, what is the best way to wrap a bottle of wine? It’s a tricky shape, but we put together a list of six creative wine bottle gift wrapping ideas to wow your next recipient.

1. Holiday Sweater Wrap

This is our favorite for the holidays. Christmas and sweaters go hand-in-hand. If you have an old sweater lying around, simply cut off the sleeves, sew the bottoms shut, and add a few stitches around the necks to make them snug — you’ve got yourself a festive koozie! If you're really feeling crafty, use left-over material to make matching hats to cover the corks. Repurposed sweater sleeves are fun and easy to make, and they can be reused on any bottle. They're a gift that keeps on giving long after the last drop.

2. Wine Pairs

The only thing better than one bottle of wine is two. This is one of the most adorable gift-wrapping ideas for wine or other alcohol bottles, and it's just as cheap as normal wrapping. Simply take your wrapping paper (ideally wine-themed wrapping paper) and lay the bottoms of the bottles facing each other. Roll them up, and then tie the tops together. You can also use this wrapping method with a piece of cloth. Try giving one red and one white wine or give twin bottles if you know what type of wine the recipient prefers.

3. Shirt and Tie

If you're dressing up for the occasion, why not give your gifts a touch of class, too? Take an old dress shirt, and cut a sleeve to fit around the bottle, leaving the cuff on top as a little collar. If the sleeve is too loose, cut the excess fabric and use fabric glue to connect the back or sew it together. Do the same to seal the sleeve's bottom. You want it to be tight enough to stay put, but you should still be able to slide it off for reuse. Finally, tie a thin necktie or bow tie around the "collar," and snip off the extra material.

4. Wine in Twine

This method for wrapping gifts is great because after the wine is gone, the bottle makes for a beautiful, rustic decoration. For this method, you will need a ball of twine and a glue gun. Apply a thin layer of glue around the bottom of the bottle, and then wrap your twine around it. Next, add another layer of glue, and continue wrapping until you reach the top. Keep all your twine in one long piece; no cutting. If you want to add some extra flair, feel free to glue down some buttons, beads, or anything else that catches your eye. If you want to get extra creative, leave the middle blank, and apply your own custom label.

5. Sock Koozies

During the holiday, like wine, a pair of socks is another one of those gifts that is just expected. This simple way of wrapping wine lets you give two gifts at once. Buy a fun pair of patterned or holiday-themed socks, place the bottle in the sock, and tie the top. And that’s it! You’re ready to go.

6. Dressed-Up Burlap Sacks

Burlap sacks have a classic, rustic look, and they're easy and fun to customize. You can make your own bag by sewing a piece of burlap with twine or buy burlap sacks online or at your local craft store. There are many ways to give the sack a unique look. You can sew patterns onto them or attach buttons, beads, and pins. One fantastic method is to use a stencil, and spray paint shapes or a pattern onto the bag. Finish the look by tying the top of the bag with twine or ribbon and add a customized name tag.

Bonus: Wine Gift Bags

From paper bags with playful patterns to fabric bags made of velvet, and even wooden boxes, there are a variety of styles to choose from. Simply pick your bag, add the wine bottle, top with tissue paper, and you are on your way.
