Italy’s Marche region is in central Italy, with Umbria to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Its wines are rarely household names, but they offer great value in delicious wines made in the region’s traditional styles.
Montepulciano and Sangiovese are the Marche’s primary red grapes. They’re most often blended together to make Rosso Piceno. This food-friendly red wine is typically fresh, with flavors of red fruits; Rosso Piceno Superiore, grown in a smaller area and aged for at least one year, is more intensely flavored and can be fuller-bodied.
Marche white wines include Pecorino, made from a unique local grape that makes delightful dry, fruit-scented wine; and Verdicchio, also known as Trebbiano, a crisp, citrusy wine packaged in a traditional amphora-shaped bottles.
