Mourvèdre/Monastrell

Originating in Spain, Monastrell, or Mourvèdre in French, makes bold and tannic wines with rich black fruit flavors.

The red Mourvèdre grape originated in Spain, where it’s known as Monastrell. Mourvèdre wines tend to be strong and tannic, with rich blackberry and black currant flavors. In France, Mourvèdre is most often part of a blend, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, other GSM (GrenacheSyrah, Mourvèdre ) wines from the RhôneLanguedoc and Roussillon regions and red and rosé blends from Bandol, in Provence.

In Spain, Monastrell is primarily grown in the Jumilla and Yecla regions to make concentrated and full-bodied varietal wines. Monastrell is also an ingredient in some sparkling rosé Cava blends.

In the New World, the grape – usually going as Mourvèdre – contributes to Rhône-style blends made in California and Australia.
