Non-alcoholic drinks – Your guide to zero-proof beverages

No longer are non-alcoholic beers the only option for when you are abstaining from alcohol. There are now non-alcoholic spirits, wines, and craft-style beers to choose from. And these zero-proof drinks do not lack flavor. Mix up a cocktail with zero-proof liquors, sip on a glass of non-alcoholic wine, or try a craft-like alcohol-free beer. You might be surprised!  

So, for whatever reason you are not imbibing, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite non-alcoholic drinks for you to discover. 

 

Non-Alcoholic Beer 

Non-alcoholic beer has been around for a while — popping up in the U.S. in the early 1900s during Prohibition. Modern brewing techniques have made it possible for brewers to produce more alcohol-free options that still pack the flavor of alcohol-containing beers. You can now enjoy non-alcoholic IPAs, Goses, and more.  

So how is non-alcoholic beer made? The process is the same as brewing a standard beer, but with an additional step before bottling, dealcoholization. Brewers can use multiple methods to remove alcohol from beer, including reverse osmosis, distillation, and evaporation. Brewers can also control the fermentation process to limit the initial alcohol content.

Non-Alcoholic Wine 

Non-alcoholic wine can also be called dealcoholized wine. Similar to making non-alcoholic beer, the wine goes through the standard winemaking process and is then dealcoholized before bottling. The alcohol can be removed via a couple of different methods, including vacuum distillation and reverse osmosis.

Non-Alcoholic Spirits  

So, what are non-alcoholic spirits? Unlike non-alcoholic beer and wine, non-alcoholic spirits never contain alcohol to begin with, so truly are alcohol-free. They are made from a combination of distilled botanicals and spices that are blended with water. Some emulate the flavor profile of a specific traditional spirit and others evoke qualities of a couple of liquors. You can find whiskey-like flavors featuring warm spices and citrus and tequila alternatives with citrus and smoke.
