We all should be drinking more Small Batch Bourbon.
For fans of Bourbon, small batch Bourbons represent some of the most exciting, unique, and utterly delicious examples on the market. And unlike many single-barrel Bourbons, small batch Bourbons tend to ring in at prices that seem well below what they could be, with character and complexity to spare.
What is Small Batch Bourbon?
And what does Small Batch Bourbon mean? Small Batch Bourbon, whether Kentucky Bourbon or a Bourbon whiskey from a different state—Bourbon does not have to be produced in Kentucky, according to American law—is a Bourbon that has been blended from a smaller range of barrels than a standard expression. This limited number of barrels generally represents some of the best that any particular producer has in stock, resulting in a Bourbon Whiskey of remarkable character.
How is small batch Bourbon made?
Small Batch Bourbon starts like any other Bourbon: A mash of at least 51% corn is soaked in hot water, which is then fermented, and that “distiller’s beer,” as it’s generally known, is then distilled until it reaches the desired percentage of alcohol. From there, it’s transferred to charred new American oak barrels to rest and age for a specified period of time. Once it’s achieved the desired character, barrels are blended to create the final product (it may also be watered back to a desired proof).
What’s the difference between small batch and single barrel Bourbon?
Whereas Small Batch Bourbon is a blend of a limited number of exceptional Bourbon barrels, a single barrel Bourbon is exactly that: A Bourbon that has been resting in a single barrel, unblended with other ones. These tend to be more expensive and are often bottled at cask strength, though not always.
What does small batch Bourbon taste like?
The taste of Small Batch Bourbon really depends on the brand of Bourbon. Some are spicier, some have more fruit flavors, and still, others can be honeyed, floral, toasty, and more. Since it’s Bourbon, however, they all tend to have a subtle sense of sweetness and spice, as well as a plush texture on the palate.

Like with non-small-batch Bourbon, Small Batch Bourbon can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail. Many professional tasters like to assess small batch Bourbon in a Glencairn-shaped glass, but for everyday enjoyment, a classic rocks glass always works well.
