Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet are among the most recognized appellations in Burgundy, synonymous with high-quality, complex Chardonnay wines. They lie towards the southern end of the Côte de Beaune region, where narrow vineyards cover the gently sloping hillsides.

Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet adjoin the village of Montrachet. Montrachet and related appellations Chevalier-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet carry Burgundy’s most prestigious designation, Grand Cru. Select Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet vineyards are designated Grand Cru or Premier Cru.

Winemakers in both Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet produce elegant Chardonnays with aromas and flavors of butter, apple, herbs and oranges with hints of mineral. Chassagne-Montrachet wines offer more tropical fruit flavors of coconut and pineapple, and tend to be a little more round and full than those of Puligny, which emphasize crisp acidity and mineral notes.

Although this section of Burgundy is known for its white wines, both appellations also produce a small amount of excellent red wine made from Pinot Noir.
