Pays Nantais

Pays Nantais is the westernmost section of the Loire Valley, where the river Loire meets the Atlantic Ocean. Classic Pays Nantais wines are made from Muscadet, the white grape known more formally as Melon de Bourgogne. They are typically dry and fresh, with notes of citrus and mineral, sometimes retaining a small bit of effervescence.

The Sèvre-et-Maine appellation, named for the two small rivers that traverse the vineyards there, produces the most heralded wines of the Pays Nantais. Its soil is light, stony and fast-draining – optimal qualities in an otherwise damp seaside region. Naturally, Muscadets made here are fine companions for shellfish, which are abundant near France’s Atlantic Coast.
