With its craggy Alpine peaks, the Trentino-Alto Adige region doesn’t have a lot of land suitable for wine production. What there is – about 15 percent of the area can be cultivated – is home to vines that survive the chilly northern climate to produce some excellent white wines, particularly Pinot Grigio.
The region, Italy’s northernmost, stretches south from the Austrian border past the city of Trento. The northern half, Alto Adige, was part of Austria until 1919, and German is still spoken there and used in the names of some local wines.
