Alicante

Established as a DO in 1957, Alicante sits in the southern portion of Valencia. It is locally known for Fondillón, a style of sweet wine unique to the DO that is made from the late harvest Monastrell grapes. Within Alicante lies the Rio Vanalopó Valley, which boasts an arid climate that serves the hearty Moastrell well. The region is also dotted with Merseguera vines, which typically produce light and fruity white wines. In 1987, the coastal area of La Marina was absorbed into the DO. Its humid climate makes it ideal for growing Moscatel grapes, the central ingredient in the famed dessert wine, Moscatel de Alicante.
