Northeast Spain

The famous Rioja region, home of the renowned Spanish wine, is the westernmost of Northeast Spain’s wine regions. It’s bordered on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the east by the Pyrenees mountains and France. Northeast Spain wine regions also include the DOs of Navarra, Aragón and, south along the Mediterranean coast, Catalunya. While Tempranillo is the red grape of Rioja, Garnacha plays a large role in the northeast, with the international varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah increasingly used in the region’s wines.
