Calatayud

When Calatayud achieved DO status in 1990, it became one of Aragon’s largest wine-producing regions (with over 13,000 acres under vine) and embarked on a course of rapid development. Both cooperatives and private bodegas have undertaken progressive improvements to take advantage of the unique climate and prevalence of old Garnacha vines, many of which are over 40 years old. The hot summers of Calatayud are tempered by the high elevation of the vineyards, which can reach over 3,000 feet, as well as the presence of the Jalón River, a major water source for the area.
