Geography
Sonoma County's Alexander Valley stretches from the upper Russian River to the city of Healdsburg and north to Cloverdale. Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in the gravelly loam soils, producing supple wines with currant, plum and cherry flavors. Chardonnay does well in the cooler areas along the hillsides. Though wine has been made in the Alexander Valley since the Gold Rush era, the area has only emerged as a source for fine wines since the 1970s.
