OVERVIEW

These wines are crafted by Karl Wente; a 5th generation winemaker in a family that some call “California’s First Family of Chardonnay.” For Karl, what makes Beyer Ranch so special is the attention to detail: the care put into cultivating the grapes. Each varietal is an homage to the land it came from and the people whose hard work created it.

Central Coast

The California Central Coast appellation runs more than 250 miles along the Pacific Coast, spanning 10 counties and some 30 designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) from the San Francisco Bay to Santa Barbara County.

The sprawling California wine region covers a variety of microclimates and terrains, but they generally all share the cooling effect of the Pacific Ocean. This has a major impact on the growing conditions on the entire Central Coast, providing an agreeable setting for a wide range of grape varieties in this part of California wine country.

Winemakers love Merlot grapes because they are easy to grow and quick to ripen. Casual wine drinkers appreciate that Merlot wines can be soft and approachable, with delicious dark fruit flavors. In Merlot blends, the grapes add a moderating influence, providing measured tannins, soft texture, medium acidity and medium alcohol. Accordingly, Merlot balances the more rustic and herbaceous qualities of Cabernet Sauvignon, a frequent blending partner.

Merlot can also make complex, full-bodied and concentrated wines with grippy tannins and aging potential. Many connoisseurs consider the best Merlot wine to come from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where the varietal predominates in wines from St.-Émilion, Pomerol and other renowned appellations. Merlot is also blended to excellent effect with the other red Bordeaux varieties, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
