What are the different kinds of glasses for wine?
Whether you're looking for a universal wine glass, a red wine glass, a white wine glass, a Champagne glass, or any of the dozens of grape-specific wine glasses available today, there is a glass for seemingly every type of wine.
Over the years, and led by the wine glass experts at Riedel, designers and scientists have perfected the optimal shape of glasses to maximize the aromas and flavors of all kinds of wine. From the more elongated shape of Cabernet Sauvignon glasses to the triangular tendencies of those that are meant for Pinot Noir, the options are limitless. However, the good news is that they are generally marketed and sold with a real sense of clarity and labeled very clearly as to which region or grape variety those special glasses were created to enhance.

What are the different kinds of glasses for beer?
Just like wine glasses, beer glasses come in a broad array of shapes and sizes, often designed for a specific style of brew. When it comes to beer glass, the IPA glass and stout glass are among the most popular, but there are also examples available that are made for certain Belgian ales and resemble brandy snifters. Even some seemingly old-fashioned pint glasses have been tweaked over the years to maximize the expressiveness of the beer poured into them.
Some of the different types of beer glasses (but not all) include:
- IPA glass (a specialty style of glass)
- Stout glass (sometimes called a "Snifter")
- Goblet glass
- Chalice glass
- Conical and nonic pint glasses
- Tulip glass
- Mug
- Beer stein
- Weizenbier glass
- Pilsner glass
- and many more!
What are the different kinds of glasses for cocktails?
The most popular cocktail glasses include a bourbon glass/tumbler, a Highball glass, and a coupe glass, which is like a smaller, round-sided version of a Martini glass. Yet even within those categories of cocktail glasses, there are plenty of options, including whether it's made of glass or crystal, how ornate or simple the design is, and the size of the glass itself—in other words, how many ounces of liquid it holds.
What are the different kinds of glasses for spirits?
There are many different kinds of spirit glasses. In general, spirits consumed neat or on the rocks, but not mixed or shaken into a cocktail, are finished in simple tumbler-style glasses, sometimes smaller for neat drinks and slightly larger for ones on the rocks. But the Glencairn-style glass has gained serious popularity in recent years for the enjoyment of Scotch whisky and other expressions of Whiskey from around the world. Brandy is often enjoyed from a snifter with a narrow top, a wider bottom, and a short stem.
Some of the most popular types of glasses for spirits and cocktails include:
- Old Fashioned glass, also called a tumbler or whiskey glass
- Rocks glass
- Whisky glass, also known as a scotch glass
- Snifter glass
- Highball glass
- Irish coffee mug
- Moscow mule mug
- Collins glass
- Martini glass
- Shot glass
Are there other kinds of "glasses" for alcohol that aren't made of glass?

RTIC and Yeti, which are independently famous for their high-quality coolers and beverage vessels, have become popular among alcohol enthusiasts for their tumblers, which keep wine, beer, cocktails, and spirits at the appropriate temperature 6+ hours. We also carry a wide range of Corkcicle drinkware, which offers tumblers and other innovative glassware as well. These brands are perfect for those on the go, tailgating, or just doing some outdoor activities.
What are the best type of glass for wine, beer, and spirits?
Answering "what is best" is entirely dependent on the situation and also based on user preference. In general, however, glass and crystal are the best materials for wine and other alcoholic beverages when entertaining. Tumblers and other materials are best for outdoor living.
