Côte de Nuits

The Côte de Nuits, the northern half of Burgundy’s celebrated Côte d’Or region, specializes in exquisite red wines that benefit from the best soils within Burgundy, a mix of marlstone and limestone. Styles vary from village to village but, in general, these Pinot Noir wines are full-bodied, elegant and lush, with intense red fruit flavors, hints of earthiness and additional complex flavors from oak. These are tremendous wines to enjoy with game, pork and red meats.

The Côte de Nuits consists of eight designated villages: Chambolle-Musigny, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Marsannay (which also has a separate designation for rosé), Morey-Saint-Denis, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot. The area includes 22 superlative vineyard sites designated Grand Cru.

There are two district appellations from the Côte de Nuits: Côte de Nuits-Villages, which are wonderfully elegant and affordable reds that are ready to drink upon release, and Bourgogne Hautes Côte de Nuits, which consists of some 20 villages in the hills west of the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits that produce wines with this appellation. Red wines also dominate here, and can be extraordinary values.
