Delicious Dornfelder
For fans of delicious reds that offer fantastic quality for unexpectedly reasonable prices, Dornfelder is a must. It may not be as famous as Cabernet or Merlot, but once you take your first sip of a great Dornfelder, we guarantee it’ll become a regular part of your wine-drinking rotation.
What kind of wine is Dornfelder?
What is Dornfelder? It’s the name of a grape variety grown primarily in Germany, as well as the wine that’s made from it. Dornfelder wine—which also commonly goes by Dornfelder red wine, Dornfelder sweet red wine, and Dornfelder sweet red—is one of the most widely planted red grapes in Germany, and the wines themselves are earning a passionate, devoted audience around the world for their increasingly high quality and remarkable prices.
Is Dornfelder wine sweet?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Traditionally, most of the Dornfelder that made its way to the United States was produced in a slightly sweet style, but today there are more and more Dornfelders that will appeal to fans of dry red wines, too.
What does Dornfelder taste like?
Dornfelder tends to boast cherry and brambly berry notes that, if the wine is made in a semi-sweet style, come off as gloriously ripe and generous. Many Dornfelders are aged in oak, which adds hints of vanilla and spice even to the dry ones.
What is a good German red wine?
Germany is home to an increasingly popular line-up of high-quality red wines. This may be a surprise to those who have always associated the country with Riesling, but it’s true. From Dornfelder to Pinot Noirs (and beyond) that are making a bigger splash on the world stage each year, Germany is a country of ever more exciting red wines.
Where does Dornfelder come from?
MDornfelder was created in Germany in 1955 when a man named August Herold crossed Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe, two grape varieties with qualities that he felt would work well together. Herold was right: his creation has gained a worldwide following that seems to grow every year.
How is Dornfelder made?
Dornfelder is produced the same was as all wines: The grapes are harvested, sorted for quality, and pressed, after which the juice is fermented either dry or allowed to retain a bit of unfermented grape sugar. It may or may not be aged in oak barrels, according to the winemaker’s preference. And then it’s enjoyed by everyone who loves a great glass or two of wine.
What are popular brands of Dornfelder?
Dr. Heidemanns and Gerd Anselmann produce delicious ones, as does Windisch. Still, there are so many options that your best bet is to ask your favorite salesperson or sommelier for their favorite next time you have the opportunity.
