James Suckling-Murcia, Spain - "A rich and intense red with lots of spice and, meat and fruit character from the Syrah. Lots of wood, too. Full body." Enjoy pairing this gorgeous red with grilled meats, pizza, or a good burger.

OVERVIEW

The wine regions of Northwest Spain include the lush corner of Galicia, known as “Green Spain.” Galicia is bordered to the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean, which keeps the region cool and damp. Galicia is best known for the Rías Baixas DO, where the native white grape, Albariño, produces delicious and refreshing wines with floral aromas and mineral flavors.

The red Mourvèdre grape originated in Spain, where it’s known as Monastrell. Mourvèdre wines tend to be strong and tannic, with rich blackberry and black currant flavors. In France, Mourvèdre is most often part of a blend, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, other GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre ) wines from the Rhône, Languedoc and Roussillon regions and red and rosé blends from Bandol, in Provence.

In Spain, Monastrell is primarily grown in the Jumilla and Yecla regions to make concentrated and full-bodied varietal wines. Monastrell is also an ingredient in some sparkling rosé Cava blends.

In the New World, the grape – usually going as Mourvèdre – contributes to Rhône-style blends made in California and Australia.
