Sulfite-Free Wine
Sulfite-free wine: myths vs. facts
There's a lot of discussion these days about sulfite-free wine, wine without sulfites, low-sulfite wine, no-sulfite wine, etc. The problem is that there is just as much questionable information out there as there are facts, which is why we've provided this primer—to separate fact from fiction and to help you make better, more well-informed decisions.
What wine does not have sulfites?
What is sulfite-free wine? Sulfite free wine is any wine that not only doesn't have added sulfites but whose natural sulfite levels are below a legally defined threshold. However, sulfites are a natural byproduct of the fermentation of grapes into wine, so finding a wine that genuinely has no sulfites at all is close to impossible. Even the vast majority of sulfite-free red wine, white wine, organic sulfite-free wine, and other sulfite-free wine brands typically have at least a tiny amount of sulfites in their wines. Just generally not enough to have any impact on the human body.
How is sulfite-free wine made?
Aside from the natural sulfites resulting from the fermentation of grape juice into wine, sulfites are traditionally added to wine to act as a preservative and prevent the formation and thriving of various wine-loving bacteria. Wines labeled as sulfite-free or low in sulfites have minimal to no sulfites added by the winemaker.
What are popular brands of sulfite-free wine?
Many brands produce wines low in sulfites and tannins, and among them, Frey is one of the most consistently popular and delicious.
Is organic wine sulfite-free?
Just because a wine is organic doesn't mean it's sulfite-free. One claim—organic or sulfite-free—has nothing to do with the other. Many organic wines have less sulfite content than non-organic ones, but it's not a guarantee from brand to brand. It's also worth noting that organic wine tends to have fewer artificial ingredients (or none at all) than their non-organic counterparts, which many people also find helps them feel better after drinking the wine.
What are the side effects of sulfites in wine?
Despite their reputation for giving people headaches, sulfites do not impact the majority of wine drinkers. People with an allergy to sulfites, or sulfur products in general, will likely have issues with sulfites. Still, in general, most people will not experience adverse effects from the sulfites in wine.
How do you get sulfites out of wine?
At the winery, hydrogen peroxide can be employed to neutralize sulfites, essentially making them a non-issue in a bottle of wine. Several products on the market claim to filter out most of the sulfites in a bottle of wine, but the science behind them is not settled.
Do sulfites in wine give you a headache?
Unless you have a specific allergy or sensitivity to sulfites, you have more of a risk of getting a headache from wine due to overconsumption than from the presence of sulfites. However, people with sulfite allergies and certain forms of asthma should exercise caution.
