Product Highlights

Vinous-Spain - Jumilla - Deep black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by hints of licorice, mocha and building spice and smoke notes. Fleshy and broad but lively as well, offering appealingly sweet, spice-laced cherry-vanilla and boysenberry flavors and a touch of candied violet.

OVERVIEW

The Jumilla DO was created in only 1996, but its wines have been revealing potential almost since its inception. A late phylloxera attack in 1989 led to a fresh start. The vineyards were replanted to produce lighter but still fruity red, white and rosé wines made from native grape varieties, particularly Monastrell, as well as imported Syrah and Merlot.

The red Mourvèdre grape originated in Spain, where it’s known as Monastrell. Mourvèdre wines tend to be strong and tannic, with rich blackberry and black currant flavors. In France, Mourvèdre is most often part of a blend, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, other GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre ) wines from the Rhône, Languedoc and Roussillon regions and red and rosé blends from Bandol, in Provence.

In Spain, Monastrell is primarily grown in the Jumilla and Yecla regions to make concentrated and full-bodied varietal wines. Monastrell is also an ingredient in some sparkling rosé Cava blends.

In the New World, the grape – usually going as Mourvèdre – contributes to Rhône-style blends made in California and Australia.
