Blaufränkisch

Blaufränkisch is a red grape that produces quality wines throughout Austria, where it’s the second-most planted red grape after Zweigelt. The best Blaufränkisch wines are “beautifully balanced, with smoky, spicy fruit flavors, winning textures and a rippling acidity” that make them seem “juicy, savory and refreshing,” writes wine columnist Eric Asimov.

Blaufränkisch is also grown around Eastern Europe under a variety of names. In Germany, and domestically in Washington, it is typically known as Lemberger.
