Bierzo

This relatively small DO spans just 1,800 miles and is located in the province of León in the Castilla y León region. The land serves as the connective tissue that ties together Galicia, León and Asturias. Protected by mountains of Sierra de los Ancares from the stormy weather of the Atlantic Ocean and the heat of the central plains, Bierzo boasts a climate that has made it one of the most promising wine-growing regions in Spain. The native Mencia, which accounts for nearly three-fourths of the grapes grown in the area, produces unique light-bodied red wines with lovely aromatics.
