Cigales, which runs along the banks of the Pisuerga River in the province of Castille y León, has always been associated with aromatic rosé wines. But once the area was granted DO status in 1991, producers began to show an interest in making red wines as well, given the enormous potential of the region’s top variety, Tempranillo, locally known as "Tinta del País." Certainly the rich soil, continental climate and grapes, which thrive during the broiling hot summers, bode well for a promising future. In 2011, the DO Regulatory Council approved the production of white wines under the DO title.
