Carignan

The red grape variety Carignan grows vigorously in the south of France, where it makes deep-colored wines with high tannins – all of which make Carignan a useful blending grape.

In the Rhône Valley, and further south in the Languedoc and Roussillon regions, Carignan may be included in the region’s red blended wines.

Carignan wine is produced in many of the world’s wine regions. In Spain, where it’s known as Cariñena, the wine is blended into Rioja and Priorat wines. In Italy the well-respected varietal wine is known as Carignano. In the United States and South America it is Carignane.
